Hi everyone!
They say that the days are long and the weeks are short here at the MTC, and it is totally true. It feels like just yesterday I was on this computer emailing last week. Just kidding, I used a different computer last week. It's also crazy how much French I've learned in just a week. We pray for the gift of tongues every day, and let me just say that it is real. In French we call it la don du longues. I don't know if that's spelled right, but it's fun to say. I can already pray pretty well in French, bear a simple testimony, and say a bunch of other gospel related words. I can bear testimony to you right now that the gift of tongues is real. I have felt it while I've been here, and it's amazing. It doesn't make me fluent by any means, but I can recall almost all of my vocabulary when I'm teaching, and when the spirit is really strong I can understand French a lot better.
So I just mentioned that the gift of tongues helps me when I teach, I'd like to talk about that for a little bit. Last Friday in the evening me and my companion taught our first investigator, completely in French. We brought tons of books with us, and basically just read stuff to her and prayed that we could understand what she was saying. After twenty five minutes of lots of repeating and hand motions, I think we taught her one gospel principle. But it was good. Her name is Aline and we have taught her a total of five times now. I do most of the talking when we are teaching, because my companion can't recall words as well as I can, but he can understand French better then me, so we work together a lot to understand her and then respond. We treat her like a real live investigator even when we aren't teaching, which is super cool. We pray for her and talk about her and plan lessons for her every day. Our district was pretty sneaky and found out that she isn't a real investigator, but even though we know that it feels 100% real when we teach her. And when we bear simple testimonies in French to her, the spirit in there is real and it is strong. I love it. Yesterday was our last day teaching her I think, but I'm pretty sure we get two new investigators this week.
Over the past week I have gotten to know my district really well. I love all of them so much. There are ten of them, and they are great. My companion is Elder Graham, I think I said that last week, but I'll say it again just in case. He is pretty funny, and also has lots of great spiritual thoughts when we are studying together. He is way taller than me, but I've gotten used to it. There is also an Elder in my district named Elder Parks, and he is probably the funniest person I've ever met. You know how there are some people who can just make you laugh super easy pretty much whenever? That's how he is with me. I've laughed so hard I've cried when I've been with him. And something else that's kind of funny is all the tie trading people do. It is kind of a cool idea, but some people are way too into it. We have about an hour to get ready for bed, and a lot of Elders in our zone go around to different rooms and trade ties during that. And some of them are super into it. It kind of reminds me of trading Pokemon cards when I was little, and it totally cracks me up.
I thought I'd end with a paragraph that is full of random details, so if you are tired of reading by now you can skip this and I won't feel bad. Actually, I won't feel bad if you don't read any of my email because I'll never know. I usually play beach volleyball during exercise time, and it is super fun. Almost my entire district plays, and so does Braden's, so we usually play together if there aren't too many other people there. Also, me and one of the other elders in my district decided to practice chin ups every day so that by the time we leave we can do a one handed chin up. We have chin up bars in our residence, and I just do five every time I pass, and I did 100 total yesterday. When we do laundry we are supposed to buy our own soap and dryer sheets, but me and my companion didn't know that last week, so we used other people's thinking that it was just there for us to use. Whoops. Oh, and I helped with the tour yesterday. If any of you go on the tour, there are a couple missionaries who will greet you and talk about the MTC for a little bit before you start, and that's what me and my companion did for three hours yesterday. It was actually kind of fun, and it went by a lot faster than I thought it would.
I just want to say that I know this church is true, and I'm so glad I'm here right now. I love it here, I love the people here, and I especially love the spirit here. It is so strong. Have a great week everyone!
Love Elder Kerr
